CHAPTER ONE

The Dead Courier

The man was already dying when he reached the warehouse road.

Kovan saw him stumble between two stacks of amphorae, catch himself against a wall, and leave a dark smear across the plaster. The harbour beyond him was still waking. Ropes creaked against wet wood. Porters shouted at one another over carts. A donkey objected to its burden with the stubbornness of an animal that had never once cared about anyone else's schedule.

Morning light had begun to thin the darkness, but it had not yet reached the narrow road between the warehouses. Lamps still burned in doorways. Their flames trembled whenever the sea wind found them.

The stranger walked another three steps.

Then he stopped.

He looked directly at Kovan.

“Indian.”

It was not a question.

Kovan did not move.

The man was Roman by his clothes, or Roman enough to have travelled under Roman authority. His tunic had once been pale. Now it was brown with dust and darker still where blood had soaked the cloth beneath his ribs. One sandal was broken. A leather strap hung loose around his ankle.

He looked less like a soldier than a man who had spent too many days carrying something important for people who had not carried it themselves.

Kovan had learned, over years in ports, not to trust appearances.

He also knew that dying men sometimes said names because names were the only currency they had left.

The stranger took another step.

“Are you Kovan?”

Something tightened behind Kovan's ribs.

He had heard his name spoken by merchants, ship clerks, porters, ship captains, tax men and men who wanted money. He had heard it shouted across markets and muttered in warehouses.

But the way this stranger said it was different.

It sounded like a name recovered from somewhere it had been buried.

Kovan caught him before he fell.

The man's weight surprised him. He was heavier than he looked, not because he was large but because a body that knew it was dying stopped helping the person carrying it.

Kovan lowered him against the wall.

“Who are you?”

The courier's eyes moved past him.

Toward the harbour.

Toward the ships.

Toward the road leading out of Berenike.

Then back to Kovan.

“Your father…”

The word struck harder than the man's weight.

For twenty-two years Kovan had carried the absence of his father as if it were an object with edges.

He had been five when the man disappeared.

Memory had not preserved him kindly. It had preserved pieces.

A hand resting on Kovan's shoulder.

The smell of rain on packed earth.

A voice speaking to someone outside the house.

A knife laid beside a bundle of papers.

And one sentence.

Never show them the mark.

Kovan had spent years wondering what the sentence meant.

A merchant's mark?

A seal?

A warning?

Something his father had drawn?

He had asked once.

His mother had told him to forget it.

He had asked again years later.

She had said, “Your father left because he had work.”

That had been the last answer.

Kovan had never believed it.

Now a dying stranger had brought the old silence back to life.

“What about my father?”

The courier tried to breathe deeply and failed.

“Don't…”

He swallowed.

“Don't give it to Rome.”

Kovan's eyes dropped to the man's hand.

The courier had been hiding something inside his fist.

He opened it.

Something small and dark fell into Kovan's palm.

It was heavier than it looked. A commercial verification piece, worn smooth at the edges by years of handling. It could have belonged in the account pouch of a merchant, beneath the counter of a warehouse clerk, or in the hand of a ship agent checking a delivery.

One side carried a broken line.

Beneath it were three short marks.

Kovan's breath stopped.

The old sentence returned.

Never show them the mark.

He closed his fingers around the object.

The courier saw that he understood.

“Your father,” he whispered, “was not the first.”

Then his grip loosened.

His head fell sideways.

Kovan stared at him.

For several breaths the harbour seemed to disappear.

Then he heard boots.

Four Roman soldiers appeared at the end of the road.

The man walking ahead of them did not hurry.

Gaius Varro had the controlled movement of someone accustomed to men making room for him. He was broad through the shoulders, carried himself like a soldier without wearing the full weight of a fighting man's equipment, and had the tired face of someone who had spent too many mornings discovering that yesterday's numbers had become today's problems.

A short scar crossed one cheek.

He stopped several paces away.

His eyes moved first to the dead courier.

Then to Kovan.

Then to the blood on the wall.

Then to the man's sandals.

Then to the warehouse doors.

Kovan noticed.

Gaius was not looking at the dead man as a dead man.

He was reconstructing the route.

Where had the courier entered?

What had he touched?

Who had seen him?

What had been moved?

What was missing?

That was how men who guarded roads thought.

Gaius finally looked at Kovan.

“Step away.”

Kovan did not.

“Who is he?”

“Give me what he carried.”

Kovan said nothing.

Gaius held out his hand.

“Whatever he gave you.”

Kovan closed his fist.

Before either man could say more, a shout came from the warehouse.

A local labourer was running.

He had been standing near the loading yard moments earlier. Now he sprinted between two carts, knocking over a basket as he went.

Gaius turned.

“Stop!”

The man did not stop.

Two soldiers ran after him.

Kovan watched the chase disappear behind the warehouse.

Gaius looked back at the dead courier.

“Interesting.”

“What?”

“The man who runs.”

Kovan looked at the body.

“You think he killed him?”

“I think he knows why someone did.”

The soldiers returned with the labourer between them.

He was younger than Kovan had first thought. His breathing was ragged. Blood stained one sleeve.

Gaius pointed to it.

“Whose blood?”

The labourer shook his head.

“I saw nothing.”

Kovan knew immediately that he was lying.

Not because of the blood.

Because the man's eyes kept returning to Kovan's closed fist.

Gaius noticed it too.

“You saw him.”

“No.”

“You saw the courier.”

“No.”

“You saw what he gave the Indian.”

The labourer's face tightened.

Kovan looked at Gaius.

The Roman looked back.

For the first time, they reached the same conclusion without needing to speak.

Someone had been watching the exchange.

The labourer had not been running because he feared the Romans.

He had been running because he feared whoever had sent the courier.

Gaius ordered the man taken aside.

Then he crouched beside the dead courier.

Kovan watched him inspect the body.

There was no ceremony in it.

Gaius checked the wounds, the belt, the sandals and the seams of the tunic. He searched the courier's hands. He checked beneath the body and along the wall.

Nothing.

No purse worth killing for.

No weapon.

No obvious document.

The courier had travelled a long way carrying almost nothing.

That made Kovan uneasy.

Men did not usually cross deserts and seas for nothing.

By late morning, another body was found behind the warehouse.

A local labourer.

Throat cut.

No cargo missing.

No valuable goods disturbed.

The warehouse owner immediately claimed that the dead man had been stealing.

Nobody believed him.

Nobody said so.

That was how ports survived.

People learned which truths were worth speaking aloud.

Kovan returned to the place where he had caught the courier.

A faint line of blood marked the wall.

Below it, in the dust, he found the impression of one broken sandal.

Then another.

Then nothing.

The courier had been alone for the last part of the road.

But someone had been following him.

Kovan could feel it now.

Not as a certainty.

As a pressure.

The feeling of being observed was different from fear. Fear told a man to run.

Observation told him to stay still.

Kovan stayed still.

He looked toward the warehouses.

Nothing moved.

A porter lifted a crate.

A sailor cursed at a rope.

Two merchants argued about the weight of a shipment.

A priest passed at the far end of the road.

The ordinary world continued.

That frightened Kovan more than a visible enemy would have.

He went back to his lodging before sunset.

The room was small, with a narrow window and a table scarred by years of use. He lit a lamp and placed the commercial piece beside it.

The flame reached only a small circle.

Beyond it, the room disappeared.

Kovan turned the object over.

The broken line was not a name.

He knew that much.

Commercial marks could do many things. A seal could establish ownership. A mark could identify a merchant house. A verification piece could confirm that a shipment belonged to a recognized chain.

But this was different.

Three short marks beneath a broken line.

He had seen variations before.

Merchant.

Guarantor.

Second merchant.

A relationship.

Not a person.

That was the first thing that disturbed him.

His father's warning had never been about a name.

It had been about a connection.

Kovan leaned closer.

There was grime packed into one edge. He scraped it away with his fingernail.

A shallow scratch appeared beneath.

Four words.

Who came first?

He read them twice.

Then a third time.

The question was wrong.

Or perhaps it was exactly right.

If the mark described a relationship, then the important thing was not merely who appeared in the account.

It was who had appeared first.

Who had been connected first.

Who had known what before anyone else could reasonably have known it.

Kovan thought of the courier.

Indian.

Don't give it to Rome.

Your father was not the first.

The words formed a line in his mind.

He hated how neatly they fitted.

He heard footsteps outside.

They stopped.

Kovan extinguished the lamp.

Darkness filled the room instantly.

For several seconds he heard nothing.

Then a board creaked in the passage.

He moved silently toward the door.

The footsteps resumed.

One person.

Slow.

Not trying to hide.

Kovan waited.

The shadow passed beneath the door.

Stopped.

Then moved on.

He opened the door.

The passage was empty.

Outside, the harbour wind had strengthened.

Kovan stepped into the street.

Two sets of footprints marked the dust.

One was fresh.

The other had been made earlier and was partly covered by later movement.

The fresh footprints belonged to the man who had just walked away.

The older set belonged to someone who had been waiting.

Kovan crouched.

He touched the dust.

The second man had stood almost directly opposite his door.

Waiting for what?

For him to open it?

For him to examine the object?

For someone else to arrive?

Kovan straightened.

Across the harbour, a warehouse clerk entered a side room and closed the door.

Inside, another man was waiting.

The clerk spoke quietly.

“The account has opened again.”

The other man did not answer.

He looked toward the harbour.

Toward Kovan's lodging.

Toward the road leading east.

Then he said only:

“Then we know who received it.”

Kovan did not hear them.

He did not know their names.

He did not know who had followed the courier.

He did not know why his father had warned him about the mark.

He knew only one thing.

For twenty-two years, he had believed that the disappearance of his father was an old wound.

Now someone had touched it.

And the wound had answered.
