CHAPTER TWO

The Indian Seal

Gaius did not sleep.

By sunrise he had questioned the warehouse workers, checked the courier's route twice, and inspected the dead man again.

Nothing fitted.

The courier had entered Berenike from the wrong direction. The second man had died without any cargo being taken. The labourer who had run had lied about seeing the courier. And the small object Kovan carried was too ordinary to explain the trouble gathering around it.

That was precisely why Gaius distrusted it.

Important things were usually surrounded by importance. Guards. Locked doors. Expensive materials. Written orders. Men who spoke too carefully.

The object had none of these.

It looked like something a merchant might lose beneath a sack of grain.

Gaius had learned that ordinary things could be more dangerous than weapons.

He found Kovan near the water.

The Indian was standing at the edge of the harbour, watching a cargo boat being unloaded. He looked as though he had come to work.

That irritated Gaius.

The previous day a dying courier had spoken Kovan's name, mentioned his missing father, and placed an unknown commercial object in his hand. A man had been murdered behind the warehouse. Another had fled.

Yet Kovan stood among the morning traffic as though the harbour had not changed.

Gaius stopped beside him.

“Show me.”

Kovan kept looking at the ship.

“Show you what?”

“The object.”

“You already know what it is.”

“I know what it resembles.”

Kovan finally turned.

For a moment neither man spoke.

Gaius had expected resistance. What he had not expected was the absence of fear.

Kovan was afraid.

Gaius could see that.

But he was not afraid of Gaius.

That mattered.

Kovan took the object from inside his tunic.

He held it between two fingers.

“Careful.”

Gaius almost smiled.

“You think it will break?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“The wrong person understanding it is worse than breaking it.”

Gaius took the piece.

It was dark from age and handling. Its surface had been polished by use. There was nothing ceremonial about it.

He turned it toward the light.

The broken line caught the sun.

Three short marks beneath it.

Gaius frowned.

“This is not a seal of ownership.”

“No.”

“Not a military mark.”

“No.”

“Tax?”

“No.”

“Then what?”

“Verification.”

Gaius looked at him.

Kovan explained.

Merchants did not always need a written document to confirm every relationship in a shipment. A recognized mark could tell another trusted person that a cargo, warehouse, guarantor or intermediary belonged to an agreed chain.

The object did not have to travel with the cargo.

That was the important part.

A man could carry the verification piece separately.

The goods could move somewhere else.

The relationship could remain.

Gaius turned it over.

“So, the object identifies a chain.”

“Sometimes.”

“A chain of people?”

“Sometimes a person and a place. Sometimes a guarantor and a shipment. Sometimes a route.”

“Does it identify the people by name?”

“No.”

“Then how do you know who it means?”

“You don't. Not from the mark alone.”

Gaius looked again at the three short strokes.

“Then what is it for?”

“To tell someone who already understands the system that the relationship is genuine.”

Gaius was silent.

He understood the danger immediately.

“If the mark is genuine,” he said slowly, “the message can still be false.”

Kovan looked at him.

“Yes.”

The answer was so simple that Gaius disliked it.

“Explain.”

“A genuine mark can be moved.”

“Moved?”

“Given to another person. Attached to another account. Shown beside another cargo. Used at another warehouse.”

“But then the mark is still genuine.”

“Yes.”

“And the person reading it believes it.”

“Yes.”

Gaius looked toward the harbour.

Ships moved in and out because men trusted other men.

Cargo travelled because someone had guaranteed payment.

A merchant released goods because another merchant had promised that the money would follow.

A caravan crossed the desert because someone had vouched for the guide.

A captain accepted a cargo because someone had accepted responsibility for it.

The world worked because relationships worked.

If someone could alter those relationships without altering the evidence that proved them, the evidence itself became a weapon.

Gaius handed the object back.

“Where did your father learn this?”

Kovan closed his fingers around it.

“My father knew many things.”

“That isn't an answer.”

“It is the only one I have.”

Gaius studied him.

“You remember him?”

“Some things.”

“What things?”

Kovan looked toward the water.

“A knife.”

Gaius waited.

“A voice.”

Still nothing.

“A warning.”

“What warning?”

Kovan looked at him.

“Never show them the mark.”

Gaius felt something cold settle behind his ribs.

“Who are they?”

Kovan shook his head.

“I don't know.”

“You have spent twenty-two years carrying a warning from a man you barely remember.”

“I didn't know it was important.”

“Until yesterday.”

“Yes.”

Gaius considered saying something reassuring.

He decided against it.

False reassurance was another kind of lie.

They returned to the warehouse.

The labourer who had fled was gone.

His sleeping place had been cleared.

The blanket was folded.

His sandals remained beneath the wall.

His wages remained.

Gaius crouched.

Kovan stood behind him.

“Who leaves money behind?”

“Someone who is more afraid of being found than of being poor.”

Gaius examined the floor.

No blood.

No struggle.

The man had left quickly but not in panic.

Someone had told him to leave.

Or someone had given him a reason.

A scrap of papyrus lay beneath a loose plank.

Gaius lifted it.

Four words.

Trust the mark. Not the man.

Kovan read over his shoulder.

“Convenient.”

“For whom?”

Gaius folded the scrap.

“That is what we need to find out.”

A noise came from outside.

Not loud.

A sandal against stone.

Kovan moved first.

Gaius followed.

They reached the alley just in time to see a man disappear around a corner.

Gaius ran.

The alley narrowed between two storehouses. Sunlight fell in a thin strip overhead. A cart blocked half the passage.

Gaius caught the man's shoulder.

The stranger twisted immediately.

His elbow struck Gaius in the ribs.

Pain flashed through him.

The man tore free.

Gaius grabbed at his tunic and caught only cloth.

Kovan appeared at the next turn.

The stranger stopped.

For a second, all three men stood still.

He was ordinary.

That was what Kovan noticed first.

No scar.

No expensive clothing.

No weapon visible.

A merchant's clerk, perhaps.

The kind of face that could disappear in a crowd before a person realized he had seen it.

The stranger's eyes went to Kovan.

Not his face.

His hand.

Kovan's fingers had closed around the verification piece.

The stranger's expression changed.

Only slightly.

Then he ran.

Kovan followed.

The chase broke into the harbour traffic.

A porter shouted as Kovan pushed past him.

A basket fell.

Someone cursed.

A mule kicked at a cart.

The stranger vanished between two lines of cargo.

Kovan stopped.

He could hear Gaius approaching behind him.

Neither man had caught him.

Gaius bent forward, hands on his knees, breathing hard.

“He wasn't watching you.”

Kovan looked toward the crowd.

“No.”

“He was watching the object.”

Kovan opened his hand.

The dark piece rested in his palm.

It looked harmless.

That was becoming its most frightening quality.

They walked back slowly.

Gaius said nothing for several moments.

Then:

“The courier was redirected.”

Kovan looked at him.

“How do you know?”

“His route.”

“The route?”

“He should have approached from the south road. He came from the east.”

“Why does that matter?”

“Because the east road puts him past three warehouses controlled by different merchants before he reaches the harbour.”

Kovan understood.

“He was being moved.”

“Or watched.”

“Same difference?”

“No.”

Gaius glanced at him.

“Not always.”

They stopped beside the dead man's former position.

Kovan looked at the wall where the courier had fallen.

A thin brown stain remained.

The blood had dried.

The man was gone.

The object remained.

That imbalance bothered him.

A dead man could be removed.

Cargo could be moved.

Documents could be altered.

But objects remembered handling.

They retained scratches.

Pressure marks.

Dirt in corners.

A fingerprint rarely survived, but a chipped edge might.

A repaired crack might reveal what had happened.

Kovan had always trusted objects more than people.

His father had taught him that.

Now he was beginning to understand that even objects could be made to tell the wrong story.

Not because the object lied.

Because people decided what it meant.

By afternoon, Gaius had assembled the pieces he could verify.

The courier had arrived from the wrong direction.

The labourer had lied.

Another labourer was dead.

A stranger had followed the verification piece.

The mark itself was genuine.

No cargo had been stolen.

No official message had been recovered.

No Roman order existed.

Gaius stared at the list.

The absence of evidence was becoming evidence of another kind.

Someone had not wanted a crime.

They had wanted a misunderstanding.

That was more difficult to prosecute.

A crime left a victim.

A misunderstanding could leave hundreds.

Gaius looked at Kovan.

“You know what worries me?”

Kovan waited.

“If this were about killing you, they could have killed you yesterday.”

Kovan said nothing.

“They had you alone with the courier.”

“Yes.”

“They didn't.”

“No.”

“They wanted you to receive something.”

Kovan looked down at the object.

“Then why?”

Gaius shook his head.

“That is what I don't know.”

Kovan slipped the piece back into his tunic.

For twenty-two years he had imagined his father's disappearance as a closed event.

A beginning.

A disappearance.

An ending.

Now he understood that perhaps it had never ended.

The courier had not brought him an answer.

He had brought him a connection.

And someone, somewhere, was watching to see what Kovan would connect it to.

Gaius looked toward the harbour.

“We are not alone.”

Kovan followed his gaze.

Among the porters, sailors, merchants and slaves moving through the morning heat, there were dozens of faces.

Most would forget them.

Some would remember.

One might already know their names.

Kovan touched the object through his tunic.

For the first time, he wondered whether his father's warning had not been about hiding the mark from Rome.

Perhaps it had been about hiding it from everyone.

Including the people who believed they understood what it meant.
